Launching the “With Knowledge, We Will Rebuild It” Initiative in Homs to Support Syria’s Renaissance
A group of community leaders in Homs has launched a national educational initiative titled “With Knowledge, We Will Rebuild It,” aiming to support Syria’s reconstruction through education and skill building. The initiative seeks to offer 10,000 free academic and vocational scholarships to empower Syrian youth inside and outside the country. Led by teachers, scholars, and experts from Syria and abroad, the program covers a wide range of fields including business, digital skills, media, programming, and school curricula. The initiative invites educators, trainers, and donors to contribute knowledge, resources, or training environments. Its implementation plan includes outreach campaigns, partnerships with training centers, and coordinated efforts with governmental and community institutions to ensure broad access. The project aspires to rebuild Syria through education and prepare a capable generation for the future.
Homs’ Historic Markets… A Gradual Revival in the Heart of a War Scarred City
Homs’ historic markets, built during the Ayyubid and Mamluk eras, are gradually returning to life after years of destruction and looting during the war. Known for their basalt stone floors, arched ceilings, and specialized trades, these markets once formed the commercial and social heart of the city. Since 2015, restoration efforts led by the governorate, the city council, the Antiquities Directorate, and UNDP have enabled around 400 merchants to reopen their shops. Despite remaining damage and incomplete roofing in some areas, traders express determination to revive their heritage and restore the markets’ economic role. The gradual return of commercial activity signals a new chapter for one of Homs’ most important historical and cultural landmarks.
Flourishing Amid the Ruins… Homs Rediscovers Life After Years of Hardship
Homs is gradually returning to life after the fall of the Assad regime, as residents come back to their neighborhoods and commercial activity revives despite widespread destruction. The removal of major security checkpoints—such as the notorious Air Force Intelligence barrier at the city entrance—has restored freedom of movement and encouraged people to return. Crowds have reappeared around the historic Khalid ibn Al Walid Mosque, where street vendors and visitors gather daily. Although more than 70% of the surrounding area remains destroyed, residents express optimism, viewing their return as a step toward rebuilding their city and reclaiming their lives.

Homs is gradually returning to life after years of destruction and siege, as daily activity begins to revive in its streets and markets following the fall of the Assad regime. Commercial movement is increasing in old neighborhoods despite the remaining rubble, and residents are cautiously rebuilding their routines. The removal of major security checkpoints—especially the notorious Air Force Intelligence barrier at the city’s entrance—marks a symbolic step toward restoring freedom of movement.
